To me, it's their rich mid-range and overall controlled tightness that gives Valcos their unique sound. The bigger ones, like 2圆L6 models, can sound very big but have a narrower band of mid-range richness Many of the small octal-tube models from the 50s will have a wider band of midrange compared to noval-tube 60s models. Tubes are 6v6, 12ax7, and a 5Y3 rectifier.īy itself, it is nice and warm, with a very smooth, mid-range overdrive. Has a high and low input, On/Off/Volume pot, white indicator light, and fuse holder (even came with an old envelope with a spare fuse in it in the cabinet!). The serial number of the amp also dates to 1960.
Probably about 5 watts, single 8" Jensen alnico speaker which dates to 1960 by the code. The model number on the faceplate is 8502-S, but stenciled on the inside of the cabinet is 62-9002B, which I believe to be a different model Airline. I cannot seem to find ANY info on this particular version of this particular amp.
I got it for (what I consider) cheap, with every intention of flipping it, but it just sounds so utterly, unbelievably fantastic that I don't think I'm going to let it go. I stumbled on this little amp at a local junk shop, and when I turned it on and plugged a guitar into it in the store, it played perfectly with no static, hum, etc., so I picked it up.
